How to give CPR to an Adult?

Would you like to know how to give CPR to an adult? But first, do you know what is CPR?

CPR is an acronym for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is made up of two techniques:

  • Delivering chest compressions
  • Giving rescue breaths

You always start with chest compressions when you deliver CPR. The act of pressing forcefully and fast on the chest is known as chest compression. Blood stops flowing through the body when a patient's heart stops beating. Blood is pumped to the brain and heart when you press on the chest

During a cardiac arrest, providing high-quality CPR can increase the chances of survival by two to three times.

In this article, we’ll see how to give CPR steps by steps for adults so that you can make the right decision when it comes time for you to act. With that said, let’s get into it.

1. Assess and Call EMS

A - Make sure the scene is safe.

  1. Look everywhere around you for any potential danger that could harm you before to approach the victim.
    1. If there is no danger, do not move the victim.
    2. If you can clear the danger, do not move the victim.
    3. If you cannot clear the danger, move the victim to safely provide first aid or CPR
  2. Be aware if anything changes and makes it unsafe for you or the person needing help.

B - Tap and shout to see if the person is responsive.

  1. The person is responsive but injured or ill, ask if he wants assistance and continue first-aid treatment.
  2. The person is unresponsive, proceed to the following steps.

C. Shout for help

  1. Shout for help to get assistance from people around (bystanders).
  2. They can assist you to phone EMS, get an AED and possibly give CPR.

D. Phone your local emergency phone number and get an AED.

  1. Phone or have someone to phone (bystander) your local emergency phone number and get an AED.
  2. If you’re alone and have access to a phone, phone your local emergency phone number and use the speaker mode.

E. Check if the person is breathing.

  1. If the person is breathing normally:
    1. Continue delivering first aid care (if needed).
    2. Roll the casualty into the ‘recovery position’.
    3. Cover the casualty (blanket) to keep his body warm
    4. Observe and reassess the casualty for continued breathing every 60 seconds until advanced help arrives.
  2. If the person is not breathing normally or only gasping, begin CPR and use the AED (if available). Check out the next steps.

2. Phone, Alert EMS and Get an AED

A. If someone comes to assist you and you have access to a cell phone.

  1. Ask the bystander to call EMS and get an AED. Say “Call EMS and get an AED.”
  2. Ask that the phone be put on speaker mode so that you can hear the dispatcher’s instructions and talk to him.

B. If someone comes to assist you but you don’t have access to a cell phone.

  1. Ask the bystander to go to call EMS and get an AED.
  2. Continue providing emergency medical care.

C. If you're alone and have access to a cell phone or a phone that's close by.

  1. Call EMS If no one comes to help.
  2. Put the phone on speaker mode so that you can hear the dispatcher’s instructions.
  3. Go get and bring an AED if available and close by (ideally within 3 minutes maximum).
  4. Return as quickly as possible and continue providing emergency medical care.

D. If you are alone and you don’t have access to a cell phone.

  1. Leave the victim to call EMS, get and bring an AED if available and close by (ideally within 3 minutes maximum).
  2. Return as quickly as possible and continue providing emergency medical care.

3. Perform High-Quality CPR

When delivering CPR, you perform sets of 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths.

A - Prepare the victim to deliver CPR

  1. Check that the person is lying on his back on a hard, flat surface
  2. Remove clothes out of the way to see the chest (if necessary).
B - Give 30 chest compressions.
  1. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest (over the lower half of the breastbone) and the other hand on top of your first hand, lacing fingers together.
  2. Keep arms straight and your shoulders directly over your hands.
  3. Push hard, fast and straight down, compressing the chest at least 2 inches/5 cm.
  4. Compress the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 times per minute (or 2 compressions per second). Count the compressions out loud.
  5. After each compression, let the chest to return to its normal position before pushing down again (allow a full chest recoil).

C. After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths.

  1. Open the airway.
  2. Give 2 deep breaths (blow for 1 second for each) while pinching the nose. As you give each breath, check if the chest rises. You know you've administered an efficient breath when you observe the chest rise.
  3. Do not to interrupt compressions for more than 10 seconds.

4. Use an AED

A. Use an AED as soon as it is brought to you.

  1. Turn on the AED and follow the instructions given by the machine (prompts).
  2. Apply the adult pads on the victim’s chest.
  3. Allow the AED to analyze the heart rhythm.
  4. Make sure that everyone is clear and no one is touching the victim
  5. Deliver a shock if needed.

B. Provide CPR and use the AED until.

  1. The patient starts to move, speak, blink, or react in some other way.
  2. Another first aider can provide CPR, taking turns with you.
  3. EMS (emergency medical services) arrives and takes over.
